The importance of Covenant Friendships

Hi there,

I believe God is saying a lot about Covenant friendships in this season which is why today’s post is from one of my covenant friends, Oluwaseun Folorunsho. I know your heart will be strengthened to trust God for good friends as you read. You are loved! ❤️

“There was a stirring in my heart at a time when God began to seek my attention. I was ambivalent about it, but I couldn’t just ignore the stirring. So I decided to get the opinion of my friends and they were like ” girl, no matter what you do, don’t become weird”😲. I took that as a “no” to whatever was going on inside me. My friends were not bad, they were Christians just like me,  wanted to live right and do right but they stayed CLEAR of anything “spiritual”

One after the other, God removed them from my life and brought me to the point of surrender. It was scary at first, I felt all alone but with time, I became accustomed to it. I began to understand my position in Christ, my purpose and inheritance. Later, God laid it in my heart to pray specifically for covenant friends. Suddenly, I was surrounded by friends who share similar passion for God, who are kingdom minded, selfless and awesome. I was overwhelmed by these new breed of friends who continuously provoked me to seek more of God and to walk righteously. I must confess that the speed of my growth was exponential, compare to when it was just God and I.

As humans, we will always long for companionship, we will desire to have people of like-minds who we can share and be free with. Most times, we allow circumstances to choose our friends for us or are moved by selfish reasons to become friends with people. However, when we choose friends without the leading of God we end up being separated from God, engage in sinful activities, brainwashed, betrayed and in a terrible state.
God is interested in every aspect of our lives including friendship. Through friendship, God draws people to Himself just as He did with me, God saves through friendship just like David and Jonathan, God extends graces and establishes Himself in a nation just like He did using Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego.

The scripture says one shall chase a thousand and two ten thousand, we usually use this in terms of marriage but I tell you, it’s applicable to covenant friendships. You are likely to get weary and situations can overwhelm you when you walk alone but when you are doing life with someone God connected to you through friendship, you can always be encouraged to keep going. They will bear your burden as if it theirs, they will be right beside you during the storms, rain and sunshine. Remember king Jehoshaphat and Ahab, Jehoshaphat joined his friend in battle to fight beside him even though it was no concern of his. Covenant friendship is exactly like that, there’s no passiveness, selfishness or comparison that leads to envy. God is at the centre .

How do you get yourself such friends? Pray for it! God said ask and it shall be given, God loves giving good gifts to His children, He won’t withhold friendships necessary for you to fulfill destiny! While you wait for His connection, make sure you are equally working on yourself to be exactly what you want others to be for you!

I totally relate to this. God took me through this process and I am so glad He did. In our walk with God, we need people of like minds and passion so as to keep the fire burning. Having covenant sister is liken to this: if you lit a stick, after some time the flame dies off but if you have bundles of sticks of fire, it burns and burns and burns.
