After struggling with anxiety, intrusive and depressive thoughts from 2019-2021, I have learnt that these three tools are very important to maintaining a healthy mind.
- Meditation
We are called to meditate day and night(Joshua 1:8). In my life, I have come to understand that if I am to have life abundantly, as Jesus came to give us (John10:10), then I must take time to sit still before the Lord daily and fix my mind on Him. Meditation is not a concept that originated from Eastern religions; it is a profound practice grounded in the Bible. This has been one of the major tools the Lord used to save my life when the enemy came for me.
Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually increase it. Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and control anxiety. When you meditate on His promises, you shift your focus to Him, rather than what makes you anxious. It also enhances self-awareness. For example, I have a fear of falling that has recently been embarrassing. When I’m at the playground with my daughters and start swinging high, my head tells me I’ll fall, and my heart starts to beat fast. Instead of giving in to that fear, I tell myself, “It will be alright. It is just a swing.” I learned these things about myself by being quiet inside.
The more you know God, the more you know yourself, and you can’t know Him without meditating on His word. This brings me to my next point.
- Bible Reading
Read your Bible, my friend. This is what will save you in the middle of crises. The word of God and His promises are your foundation. Memorize the scriptures; they will save you when you are tempted, tried, or persecuted. When I was tempted to speak evil during my mental health crises, I remembered that death and life are controlled by the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), and that saved my life.
Know God’s word for yourself, not just what your pastor says or the doctrine of your church. People have died to get that book into your hands. It is not meant to lie under your pillow like a charm; it is meant to be put in your heart to change you, make you look like Jesus, and protect you from the issues of life. Read your Bible.
- Praying in Tongues
Lastly, pray in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:4a says, “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.” To edify yourself means to strengthen yourself. You need to be strong to stand when the enemy comes against you with demonic thoughts, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and depression. You need to be strong to fight because this life is a war. The enemy is trying to get you to go to hell, but God has given us the weapon of praying His will in tongues. Don’t let Satan deprive you of this great supernatural resource.
Christianity is supernatural, and the more you align yourself with the supernatural life, the better and more fulfilling your life will be. So pray in tongues, dear sibling. I know there is controversy about whether tongues are for us today, but if it is in the Bible, then it certainly is for you and me. Take advantage of what we have.
You have been bought with a price.
With lots of love,
Your sister favour.
P.S. If you are blessed and would like to be part of what God is doing here, I’d like to invite you to register for the meditation challenge (August 1–31st, 2024) and Mind of Christ Conference (August 29th–31st, 2024).
